I wonder, when did life-long perfection become a prerequisite for taking a moral position? Let’s focus on the morality of sport hunting and leave the ancient history of Gavin Newsom’s indiscretions out of it.

There is a spectrum of morality in hunting, as in everything else. The extinction of the passenger pigeon and the near extinction of the American bison are examples of hunting at its worst — along with present-day helicopter wolf hunts and obscenely scripted African trophy hunts. It would make no sense to morally equate these examples with survival hunting by contemporary hunter-gatherers or Alaskan homesteaders.

But, since it is plainly true that, on a yearly basis, billions of animals suffer and die at our hands, we might simply ask: how much of this suffering and death is actually necessary?

Little’s defense of this particular lion killing — saying that the recreational shooter “ate” the cat — would make an equally good defense for a cougar killing a human — except that the cougar would emerge as morally superior, because while cougars actually need meat to survive, we humans need no meat at all.

Firstly, please note that this question is clearly not aimed at the anti-hunting, anti-gun lobby, so please don't answer with such comments.

I am not a hunter myself but I am very interested in the history of hunting and the activity itself.

I would be very grateful if anybody could tell me, in terms a layman could understand, how hunting is not purely a selfish pass-time but also benefits the natural environment and local communities?

First of all Hunting is a great way to control animal population. with out it these animals would become overpopulated and die a slow and painful death of starvation and sickness.
Most hunters are very concerned about the environment and hunt by disturbing as little as possible.
It helps local communities (I'll use my small town for example) with sales of hunting supplies. they help local business such as restaurants 1 of the restaurants in my town nearly triples in profit between November and January just because of the out of town hunters. Lastly out of town hunters need a place to sleep. In the 1 motel in my town it is about impossible to get a room during hunting season.

well, it puts food in there belly and fur on there back, and some tribes even build their homes with fur. people can turn the bones/horns/antlers into tools to make stuff with and maybe to sell.

that's just SOME of the benefit for humans.

hunting keeps animals from over populateing and in turn that keeps them from starveing and becomeing diseased. it also helps to keep local plant life healthy and not over eaten.

so if done right, hunting can be a win-win for humans and animals, even if it doesnt seem like it. to put it simple, without hunting the human race would not be what it is today.

Did you know that sportsmen, not mountain bikers, bird watchers or hikers, pay for conservation and endangered species protection? sportsmen pay 75 percent of the costs of state game agencies. taxes on hunting equipment- not hiking, skiing, or rock climbing gear- are taxed 10 percent for conservation. by paying Pittman-Robertson surtaxes on guns, ammo and other gear, hunters sent $294,691,282 to state conservation programs in 2005.
that's one thing hunting's done before hunters even go out to hunt. not to mention keeping a healthy balance for animals so they wont overpopulate. the human element is key in the preadator-prey relationship. we need to stay in that relationship for a healthy environment for conservation. then everyone is happy!

Wildlife is a renewable resource, it keeps the Animals from becoming overpopulated resulting in Starvation, Disease.* Hunting preserves wildlife for future generations to enjoy, and provides healthy food for the Hunters and their Family, and Friends.* it also contributes to employment, and the economy.*

I need a airsoft hunting rifle or just a normal air soft rifle. What is the name of the air soft rifle that goes 1700 feet per second only the gun that goes 1700 feet per second.Does anyone know a website that has that gun?

I think you may have Airsoft confused with air rifles. if Airsoft guns shot a BB at 1700 fps, there would a lot of dead people around! there are many different air rifles to chose from, however, the ones that do shoot 1700 fps. are just a bit spendy. good Luck Travvis- Home of the brave Outdoors.

I don't imagine there is such a gun and an airsoft gun is not a good choice for hunting anything. 1700fps is faster than some pistol cartridges. if you need a rifle to hunt with, it might be time to put down the toy and get a real rifle.

the maximum allowed fps at any regular field for an ->airsoft<- gun is 550fps

Airsoft guns shoot 6mm or sometimes 8mm plastic bbs just in case you didn't know.

Its not an "airsoft rifle" it is a pellet gun it is "Gamo".

There's no such thing as an airsoft hunting rifle.

My son was invited on a hunting trip with some friends and their dads. I've heard that a lot of times hunting trips are legitimate but other times they're just ways to molest. What is your experience and please tell the truth

If your so worried about it, why don't you join a club yourself and take him. Im sure if it's his first hunt he would want it to be with his dad anyway. If not and you don't trust the situation then simply say NO. why ask a common stranger on Yahoo, when it's your son and you don't trust the guy taking him? There's always next time. He is just as likely to get molested on a 5 min trip to Mcdonald's as a 2 day trip in the woods. Use your best judgement and get to know the guy first. in my club like Ever Viligant stated he wouldn't last long and doubt he would ever be found in more than one peice if this did happen. I would be more worried about a hunting accident between a group of boys and one grown-up trying to control the situation. but you haven't stated his age, so I couldn't give you advice on that either.

I have never heard and know no one that would take a child on a hunting trip for any reason other than to hunt, but that does not mean that it doesn't happen. as a parent you need to use your judgment of the individuals that he is going with and decide for yourself if they are legitimate hunters and have the child's best interest in mind. most hunters that are kind enough to take a child hunting are just trying to let them experience the outdoors and teach them about the sport.. Hunting and fishing with a child is the best thing you will ever for them.. why don't you go along with them and learn to hunt as well. it would be something that you and your child will share for a lifetime.

If…and I say this most stringently…IF somebody molested a child in our deer camp there wouldn't be much left of him when after we found out. Hunting is a few guys getting together to pursue a quarry…usually with guns…and lots of testosterone….a setting not conducive to long life and health for a molester.

he is going on a hunting trip FACT: most hunters frown upon anything immoral like that so I wouldn't worry about it. now if he were going on a catholic camping trip I would worry.

i know im posting this again beacuse i cant have enough info so in 10 days it will be my first day of deer hunting i will be hunting with a bow do you guys have any good hunting tips ?

Deer can smell a human scent so make sure the wind isn't blowing your scent towards where you expect the deer to come from. Scent control is important. Practice with your bow so that you can make a good clean kill shot. Camo is a good thing to wear. Dress for the weather. Draw your bow back when the deer isn't looking your way. If you hit the deer, don't look for it too soon. If it's still able to run, you spook it and it will continue to run away if it can. Scout before you go out hunting. Hunt where there are deer.

Keep your shots clean and make them count.

Be quiet, stay calm AND don't eat gassy foods.

Now remeber, Don’t Text While Driving.  Soon texting while driving will get you into jail just like a DUI.  It will be interesting to see what legislation will be put in place.

The nation’s air traffic controllers cannot bring cell phones into work. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restricts the use of cell phones by pilots and crew when the planes are on the ground.

And last week, after a Metrolink engineer was found to have been sending and receiving text messages before he ran head-on into a Union Pacific freight train – a collision that killed 25 – the state Public Utilities Commission voted to impose a texting ban on all train engineers, conductors and brakemen while on duty.

Ironically, state regulators had been preparing a ban on wireless devices following two other collisions.

The use of text messaging is exploding as the latest tool to talk to one another.  The Wireless Association says there were 75 billion text messages sent in June, up from 7.2 billion in June 2005.

Verizon Wireless cites Charlotte, North Carolina as the “textiest” area of the south where text messaging is up 600 percent in 24 months.

Not surprisingly, the incidence of “Driving While Texting” or DWT, is largely a function of age.

An estimated 20 percent of drivers are texting while behind the wheel, according to a Nationwide Insurance study.   Among young people, between the ages of 18 to 24, that number skyrockets to 66 percent.

According to NHTSA, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15 to 20 year-olds. So adding a device that requires the user to concentrate on a tiny screen while punching miniature keys, does nothing to improve that record.

In the spring of 2007, a crash in suburban Rochester killed five teenage female friends when they collided with a tractor trailer. The five had just graduated from high school. All of the girls died.Police discovered the 17-year-old driver had been texting just before the crash.

The internet is full of graphic images, too graphic to even to link to here, of children being pulled from accordioned-cars in pieces.

But laws have been slow to catch up to the danger that texting while driving poses, even though people say they want more restrictions on driving while texting or DWT.

9 out of 10 say they support a ban driving while texting, according to a poll done by Pinger Inc. and conducted by Harris Interactive.

Texting makes driving “distracting, dangerous and should be outlawed”  the poll finds, while a British study finds that texting while driving impairs driving skills more than being drunk or on drugs.

Distracted driving — including eating, applying makeup and reading — triggers nearly 80 percent of the nation’s car crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

But NHTSA does not have a policy in place regarding text messaging while driving a car.  Regulations are up to states and local agencies, according to NHTSA.

“Certainly, texting is the issue du jour this year in the legislatures,” says Matt Sundeen of the National Conferences of State Legislatures.

High-profile accidents almost always translate into legislation, says Sundeen.

It’s happening in the states but slowly.

So far Washington State, Alaska, Louisiana, Minnesota, and New Jersey prohibit texting while driving.  In Washington, it is a secondary offense, meaning an officer cannot pull you over for that offense alone, otherwise you are facing a $125 fine.

In Washington, the legislation has had little effect.

Last week, the Seattle Post- Intelligencer reports that in the nine months since the ban took effect, a total of two tickets for the offense have been filed in Seattle Municipal Court. Statewide, 58 citations have been issued, a small portion of the nearly one million traffic stops made there so far this year.

The city of Chicago is considering a ban. Violators would face a $75 fine, up to $200 if a crash occurs.

Westchester County, New York goes into effect March 9, 2009. Voted in by the County Board of Legislature, it carries a $150 fine for each violation.
New York already bans the use of handheld cell phones while driving.

While other states are considering legislation, the powerful telecommunications lobby has shot down proposal in Florida and Maryland. And cell phone while driving bans have been largely ignored by teens, reports show.

Even when DWT bans are put into effect they don’t hold much of a threat.

The California legislature approved a bill in August that bans DWT (driving while texting), with violators facing a $20 first fine and $50 for subsequent offenses.  Gov. Schwarzenegger has still not signed it waiting for the state budget to be approved. He received the budget last Saturday.

Entrepreneurs are there to fill in the gap for those suffering from texting withdrawal.

Jot encourages drivers to make a hands free cell phone call to Jot which will transcribe your call into an email and send it to someone on your address book.  All free of charge, at least for now.

And Pinger, the company that conducted a new survey on text messaging, just happens to make an instant voice messaging service. Call them, say the name of the contact, speak your message to them then hand up. Drivers can send a message to any U.S. mobile phone “while keeping their eyes on the road” says the service.

Unfortunately, a higher body count may have to happen before laws catch up with the problem.
