BRATTLEBORO — A Los Angeles truck driver was arrested for leaving the scene and for careless and negligent operation after he crashed his truck into another vehicle at the intersection of Main and High streets Thursday afternoon.

Sunil Kunwar, 31, was also issued a violation from the Department of Motor Vehicles after an inspector found that the driver’s log book was inaccurate and that he had driven in excess of the hours allowed in a day without sufficient rest.

According to a Brattleboro Police Department press release, Kunwar was coming down High Street in a tractor trailer , and turned left, onto Main Street.

Witnesses said Kunwar’s truck struck the wheels of a 1995 Volkswagen Golf driven by Amber Brown of Guilford.

Brown’s vehicle was stopped at a red light on Main Street.

The truck drove up and over the hood of Brown’s car, causing heavy damage, and then left the scene.

Brown was transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

Traffic was slowed for about 45 minutes while the scene was cleaned up and the car towed away.

Kunwar’s truck was later spotted on Putney Road.

Kunwar was on his way to C & S Wholesalers and was coming from Decataur, Ill.

The Brattleboro Police Department called in an inspector from the Department of Motor Vehicles who issued four violations to Kunwar.

Capt. Jake Elovirta, Chief of Safety for Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, said Kunwar was issued a $156 ticket, and was ordered out of service for 10 hours, for falsifying his driving log.

Kunwar was not allowed to drive his truck until 2 a.m.

Kunwar was also cited for failing to record his mileage, for driving more than 11 hours and for exceeding the number of hours allowed to drive in an 11 hour period.
